A compact ESC with a mix of brains and brawn! The Mars AM32 50A motor controller is the ideal match for any small but demanding brushless motor, featuring current limiting in an absolutely tiny package! AM32 is an open-source firmware in active development in the world of drones and RC rock crawlers, but it has a huge application in robotics. It offers extremely fine motor control, especially at low speeds when high torque is required, when compared to other firmware options. It is also easy to tune using freely available software. For more information, check the AM32 github!
One of AM32’s best features is that it is available in brushless or brushed versions. For now we are offering brushless only firmware, and we pre-install a generic 25A limited, uni-directional-without-braking setup which will work for lots of systems out of the box. That said, we strongly recommend tuning the code to your specific needs for the best performance (more info below). Note that all Mars controllers will ship with the latest stable firmware version of AM32, which is currently 1.99.
The Mars 50A has presoldered wires and bullet connectors on the motor side. In the box you will receive spare heatshrink in case you decide to resolder!
A single package contains:
- 1x controller
- Spare heatshrink
The key technical details are:
- Dimensions (W*H*L): 20.5*8.8*48.5mm + wires (including input capacitor, which for low voltages systems you could remove)
- Wire spec: 125mm 16AWG (power) + 3.5mm bullet connectors (motor), 150mm + Futaba connector (signal)
- Weight: 24g (including wires)
- Current rating (with adequate cooling): 50A
- Input voltage: 2-6s
For anyone looking to tune their own settings, this ESC is compatible with several builds of AM32, but is currently shipped with a modified version of “AM32_Tekko32_F421” which ensures the voltage/current sensing is accurate. You can download that here:
- Adjusted version of Tekko32: AM32_Tekko32_F421.hex
- You’ll also need the configuration tool: Windows, Linux
To connect to your ESC you will need a USB serial adapter, a Betaflight flight controller or you can repurpose an Arduino. There is plenty of information about this online and on the repository.
We will ship your Mars 50A controller with these settings (note, they aren’t absolutely maxed out and are single direction)! If you have a custom firmware request, just get in touch and we’ll be happy to help!
All credit for the excellent AM32 firmware goes to its developers!
